Narratives and Self Portraits

NARRATIVES and SELF PORTRAITS contains two related groups of drawing.

SELF PORTRAITS
Every once in a while - over the years - I have looked in the mirror and drawn.
After my daughter was born in 1983 I embarked on a series of self portraits as a way of acknowledging the transformation into motherhood.
These pieces, along with a series of large abstract drawings, were exhibited in a show entitled FROM THE NAVEL TO THE UNIVERSE in 1988 at the Burnaby Art Gallery in Burnaby, BC, Canada

NARRATIVES
This loosely grouped body of drawings engages representational narrative information. The drawings are grouped together irregardless of the dates of production or content.

They are often transitional pieces in which I am working out whether an idea is complex enough for a series. Often these drawings occur while working on another project, sometimes they happen as single visual thoughts or "one-off".

Sometimes they are produced for a specific function (fundraiser, thematic group show, etc)

I find that I often talk to myself through these drawings as a kind of visual diary.
The narrative content ranges from explicit to ambiguous; didactic to confused, transitional to fully realized.

All allow the immediacy of drawing to tell the story.

Other series which also contain narrative content: "ROOTED STRIDES", "BRAIN FLOWERS","WOMEN IN ARMOR" and "LISTENING TO THE INNER EAR"

"Written Matters" is a project which evolved out of the "...Inner Ear: The Coversations"
